At the University of Arkansas, a budding new hub is emerging to support and
empower Indigenous students—the Native American Student Services (NASS) department.
NASS serves as a crucial resource for students of Native American heritage, fostering
a sense of community and belonging on campus. NASS was strengthened by the hiring
of Shawnee Tribal citizen Gregory Jones to fill the role as the NASS Director.
Native American Student Services at the University of Arkansas
NASS offers a wide array of services tailored to meet the unique needs of Indigenous
students. From academic advising to cultural programming, the department strives to
ensure that every student receives the support they need to thrive academically, personally,
and culturally. Whether it's connecting students with scholarship opportunities, providing
mentorship, or organizing cultural events, NASS is committed to enhancing the university
experience for Indigenous students.
One of the key initiatives of NASS is its commitment to preserving and celebrating
Native American culture. Through events such guest lectures, and workshops, students
have the opportunity to engage with and learn from their cultural heritage. These
events not only enrich the campus community but also provide a platform for Indigenous
voices to be heard and celebrated. Another fantastic initiative is the creation of
the Native American Leadership Council. Through partnership with NASS and the School
of Art, the NALC will serve as a cornerstone in providing guidance, support, and advocacy
for Indigenous students and the University.
Moreover, NASS serves as an advocate for Indigenous students, ensuring that their
voices are represented, and their needs are addressed within the university community.
By fostering partnerships with other campus organizations. NASS works to create a
more equitable and supportive environment for all students.
In addition to its on-campus initiatives, NASS also plays a vital role in connecting
Indigenous students with resources and opportunities beyond the university. Through
partnerships with tribal organizations, and community groups. NASS helps students
build networks and access support systems that extend far beyond the university campus.
