What is Consent? Active, Clear, and Ongoing
As we begin a new academic year, we begin new classes, have new teammates, friendships, and relationships. It is also a good time to remember something everyone in our campus community should understand; consent is matters.
Consent means those involved in the sexual activity are participating freely and actively. Consent should be voluntary, mutually expressed, and ongoing. No one should assume that because of a past relationship, previous sexual activity, flirting, silence, or lack of resistance equals consent. Anyone can change their mind at any time, including during the sexual activity.
Consent cannot be given when someone is forced, threatened, pressured, or unable to make a clear decision because they are incapacitated. If or when you are unsure about consent, the best approach is simple: ask, listen, and respect the answer.
Creating a respectful and safe campus community is something we all contribute to and should work to maintain. So, as we start the new semester, take a moment to reflect on the Title IX training you completed when you joined or arrived on campus. The training covered consent, respectful boundaries, prohibited conduct, reporting options, and resources available if you or someone you know needs support.
